Absenteeism, Early Pickup and Late Drop off: OBI is paid by the State of Maryland for each day of service we provide to an individual. It is important to minimize the time a person is out of the building for medical appointments, etc. We must provide at least 4 hours of service on days of appointments. Individuals must be in by 10:30am and should not leave prior to 12:30pm. Excessive absenteeism results in large losses in our annual funding and could result in discharge from OBI, by the Developmental Disabilities Administration. Please keep your attendance up so that OBI does not suffer financially and services are not jeopardized.

2009 Holidays - OBI will be closed on these days:

  • New Year's Day - December 31, 2008 & January 1, 2009
  • Martin Luther King's Birthday - January 19
  • Moving Day - January 20
  • President's Day - February 16
  • Easter - April 10
  • Memorial Day - May 25
  • Fourth of July - July 4
  • Glen Burnie Carnival Day of Fun - July 28
  • Labor Day - September 7
  • Thanksgiving - November 26 & 27
  • Christmas - December 24 - 25
  • New Year's Eve/Day - December 31, 2009 & January 1, 2010

Inclement Weather: OBI's snow policy is to close to clients when Anne Arundel County Schools are closed due to snow or inclement weather. If schools are opening 1 or 2 hours late, OBI will also begin transportation and work 1 hour late. This means transportation will start at approximately 8:30am instead of 7:30am. Individuals who do not ride OBI transportation should arrive at work at 9:30am. If schools are already closed for a holiday or in-service day, please listen to WBAL radio.

Staff still report to OBI unless instructed differently by their supervisor.

Medical Appointment: It is very important that we keep all medical reports on file at OBI. For example, physical, dental, vision, nutritional, gynecological, hearing, speech, occupational or physical therapy reports on file, help us to provide better services and are required by our licensing agency.

Medication Changes: Please be sure that OBI is made aware of any medication changes when they occur. Often times there are symptoms of these changes that we need to watch for.

Doctor's Release: When a person is off of work for any illness for three or more days, OBI must have a doctor's release for the individual to return. The release should include return to work date and any restrictions that the individual may have.

PM Transportation Drop off - OBI/Residential Joint Policy: When drivers drop off in the afternoon it is often difficult to know if someone is actually home. For individuals who are not independent, family/staff must come to the door and acknowledge the vans arrival to assist us in assuring that individuals arrive home safely.

Snow Removal: Please be sure to remove snow from driveways and sidewalks to allow individuals safe passage to the vans. If the van driver falls on your property, our insurance company has advised us that we seek damages from your insurance provider.

Direct Deposit: OBI offers the great convenience of direct deposit of your paycheck. Contact Julie at the office to complete the process or with any questions. On payday you will still receive a payroll statement, so you will know what was deposited into the bank. This is also a solution to those that seem to hold checks for months and then deposit them, which causes additional work for our accounting office.

Personal Items: We have a large number of individuals bringing cell phones, pagers, radios, large sums of money, etc. to OBI. These items tend to get lost very easily. For personal items, like keys and jackets, which are brought to OBI, please be sure there is identification on the items. We discourage valuable items being brought to OBI and we are not responsible for keeping track of the items or replacing them if they become lost.

Lunch: OBI has a few microwaves in the building to be used to heat lunches for individuals who have Doctor prescribed pureed diets. It is extremely difficult for a large number of individuals to prepare lunches in the microwave in a 30-minute lunch period. We request that lunches are comprised of items that do not need to be microwaved. It is also advisable for all individuals to bring ice packs in their lunch bags.

Lockers: We have lockers at OBI for individuals to use. If you are interested in a locker, please check to be sure we have one available in your area. If we do, locks with combinations or 2 keys need to be provided. We will keep combinations and extra key on file in case one is forgotten or lost.
