Opportunity Builders Inc., formerly the Sheltered Workshop of Anne Arundel County, was founded in 1962 by a group of parents and advocates who wanted more for their children then going to a day care program. The founders had envisioned people with and without disabilities coming together to form a partnership that would generate new vocational training and employment opportunities.
A work center was established in an old firehouse on Truck House Road in Severna Park and then re-located to a warehouse facility on Langley Road in Glen Burnie. In 1991, due to space limitations, the program moved to its current location in Hanover, Maryland. The program expanded to include competitive community placement services and the name was changed to Opportunity Builders Inc. (OBI).
Our founders vision has materialized over the years and more and more, people with developmental disabilities are active participants in everyday life. At OBI we use individual choice and preferences, accommodation and coaching in matching individuals and employment opportunities. This is the cornerstone of our program.
